Are objects sexist?
Personal protective equipment
What is considered the ‘standard’ is actually male.
Our environment is built on data biased by centuries of patriarchy. Therefore some objects discriminate against women. Personal protective equipment is a category of objects that includes masks, gloves, goggles, pants, vests, jackets, safety shoes, overalls....
The less suitable the equipment, the less likely it is to protect women. In the worst cases, it can even hinder the work of the users or even injure them. This mémoire questions the responsability of the designer to adress these issues and the ability of design to help create a more inclusive world.
